NAWAI is a women-led local organization based in Kapoeta, South Sudan. We work to strengthen community resilience and support women, girls and crisis-affected households to shape decisions that affect their lives.
Our priority areas
NAWAI’s priorities reflect interconnected needs identified with communities in Kapoeta East, where drought, displacement and insecurity are placing additional pressure on households and essential services.
Water, sanitation and hygiene
Support safe water access, household water treatment, hygiene practices, menstrual health and community-managed facilities.
Food security and livelihoods
Help vulnerable households protect their wellbeing through context-appropriate assistance and more resilient livelihoods.
Health and nutrition linkages
Mobilize communities, identify urgent risks and connect children, pregnant women and lactating mothers with available services.
Why local action matters
The Lokur Mur rapid assessment documented overlapping risks that require coordinated action. A locally rooted organization can sustain dialogue, notice changing risks and support accountability through trusted community structures.
Water accessShortages, long queues and conflict at water points were reported.
NutritionScreening identified acute malnutrition and gaps in available nutrition services.
ShelterThe assessment reported displaced families living without adequate shelter.
ProtectionWomen and girls faced heightened risks linked to displacement and water collection.
Evidence note: the assessment screened only 20 children. Its nutrition results indicate urgent concern but should not be presented as representative of the full population without a larger assessment.

NAWAI was established in July 2025 as a women-led local organization based in Kapoeta. It is developing partnerships for locally led humanitarian response, recovery and resilience while keeping affected communities at the centre of action.
